1924 - The Bezri family portrait The Bezri family (Mrs. Eltaher’s family) portrait showing her mother Awfa Zantout; her father Youssef Bezri; her older sister Fatmé (in black); her older brother Salim (Married Hayat Mehio in Lebanon); her younger brother Toufic (Believed dead during a hunting accident in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, but his remains were never found); her younger two sisters Safeyya (Sophie according to her school records at the Soeurs de la Charité de St. Vincent de Paul sisters school in Alexandria) is standing on the right. Safeyya married Dr. Sadeq Allawi and lived in Baghdad, Iraq). The youngest in the family Rawheyya (Espérance according to her school records at the Soeurs de la Charité de St. Vincent de Paul sisters school in Alexandria), is standing between her parents. Rawheyya married Dr. Hosni Eltaher, Eltaher’s cousin, and lived in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The young Mrs. Eltaher, Zakeia, at age ten or eleven is seen standing in the centre of the rear row.

The portrait was taken around 1924 after they moved from Sidon in Lebanon and settled in Alexandria, Egypt. When the portrait was made, the Charleston fashion was raging at the time, as the reader may notice in Rawheyya’s and Safeyya’s dresses. When the two young girls saw the fashionable necklaces at the photographer’s studio, they insisted on wearing them for the picture!
