In November 1927 Ahmad Shafiq Pasha invited a number of dignitaries and literary figures to his residence in Cairo in order to plan a special event in honour of the “Prince of Poets” Ahmad Shawqi Bey.
The picture shows the members of the Preparatory Honouring Committee seated from right to left: Amin Bey Al-Rafei, Egyptian nationalist and writer – Kheireddine Al-Zerkly, Syrian writer and author – Noureddine Bey Mostafa – Imam Sheikh Mohamed Rashid Reda – The host Ahmad Shafiq Pasha, Chief of Cabinet of the Khedive (Vice Roy) of Egypt and a prominent Egyptian politician – Emir Amin Arslan, former Ottoman diplomat – Dr. Yaaqoub Sarrouf, Publisher of the “Al-Moqattam” daily, then Vice President of the American University of Beirut – Othman Pasha Mortada , former Chief of the Khedive’s cabinet – Sheikh Ibrahim Tfayyesh, Islamic Algerian writer.
