1931 - Omar Mokhtar led to the gallows Libyan nationalist leader Omar El-Mokhtar aged 69 led to the gallows by his Italian captors in 1931.

Omar El-Mokhtar led the insurrection of his people in the 1920s and 1930s against Italy, which had invaded and occupied their country. For more information about this incident and Libya's modern history in general, please consult the following book: "The Origins of the Libyan Nation by Anna Baldinetti, Routledge, London and New York (2010).

Italy's neighbours and allies Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany each had its colonies, while Italy had none. This was enough of a justification for Italy's leaders to invade and occupy Libya and Ethiopia. Of course the populations of both countries rose in defence of their homeland against this foreign invasion.
