Autographed portrait of the Tunisian activist Habiba Menchari presented to Mrs. Eltaher. During a conference held in Tunis in 1924, Mrs. Menchari publically demanded the abolition of women’s veils, and proceeded there and then to remove her own veil, thus causing quite a stir among the male audience. In 1928 Mrs. Menchari called for the emancipation of Tunisian women and called for the abolition of polygamy. Laws were passed later on during the presidency of Habib Bourguiba in the late fifties that led to the liberation of Tunisian women.
