France, as a League of Nations mandated power, carved the Mountains of Lebanon from Greater Syria after the defeat of the Ottomans following WWI, and created a new state, Lebanon, which it occupied until 1943. During that period it issued French passports – not French citizenships - to the Lebanese people. France also excised the rich agricultural lands of the province of Alexandretta in north-western Syria and ‘gave’ them to Turkey, while Britain ‘gave’ Palestine to the European Jewish settlers.
Briefly stated, the Mandates system was created by Britain and France after WWI to legitimise their grabbing of other nations’ countries. To bestow an aura of legitimacy on their illegal generosity, they created and led the League of Nations, which “awarded” those Mandates to the two colonial powers, i.e. to themselves! The same happens today under various other types of pompous semantic disguises, but really nothing has changed since then. No wonder there is a lot of violently unhappy people out there! |
